Reopened a couple of months after the lockdown, K9 Resto has been working its way back into Mangalore’s food scene, this time with a noticeably refreshed menu and even the addition of sizzlers. Known originally for its dog-friendly setting, this café has always been a place where people came more for the company of furry friends than for the food itself. I’ll admit - I was one of them. The food never stood out, and visits were more about the vibe. But ever since they reopened, there’s been a marked improvement in what comes out of the kitchen, enough to make me come here for the food alone, which says something.
The space still carries its casual, easy-going energy - people chatting over cold drinks, dogs lounging nearby, and that sense of community that K9 always had. Only this time, the food finally seems to be catching up with the warmth of the place itself.
Their take on this classic Mangalorean dish is a pleasant surprise. You can actually taste the depth of the red chillies without the spice overwhelming the palate. The paneer is cooked right - soft, nicely coated, and rich without being greasy. It’s definitely an improvement from the earlier version and something I’d genuinely recommend trying here if you’re looking for a vegetarian pick with a local twist.
A classic through and through - mint chutney, spiced potatoes, and melted cheese layered between crisp toasted bread. The first couple of times I tried this, it was pretty spot-on: balanced flavours, good texture, and that comforting street-style appeal. However, during a recent visit, the sandwich seemed to have lost its touch, unevenly grilled and lacking that zest it once had. It’s one of those items that leaves you hoping for the kitchen to find its consistency again.
The Cool Blue is exactly what you’d expect, its sweet, fizzy, and perfect for a warm afternoon. The Virgin Mojito, though not pictured, hits the right notes with its citrusy freshness and minty punch. Both are easy choices to unwind with when you just want to sit back and relax without a care in the world.
K9 Resto remains a place that’s loved more for its atmosphere than for its menu but that’s slowly changing. The food, while still somewhat inconsistent, has shown real signs of improvement. Some dishes hit the right note, others fall short, but there’s definite progress from what it used to be. Whether you’re dropping by to spend time with the dogs or to grab a quick bite, K9 is finding its footing again one plate at a time.
